Overlay.tv

February 14th, 2008

Today I came across Overlay.TV a site that lets you put “stuff” on top of your videos.  I know that we’ll certainly be getting some use out of their service.

You can pretty much throw any text, images, links, buttons etc.. on top of your videos and making them linkable to other web pages.  Perfect for bands that want to add a “buy it now” button on their clips.

Let me know if you produce anything with it.

Later.

What’s New in PHP 5.3?

February 13th, 2008

Ben Balbo over at Sitepoint put together a great piece on what’s new in PHP 5.3.  Being self-taught and primarily working on small to mid-level size application development I usually don’t take advantage of PHP’s OOP functionality but many of the major updates are in the OOP realm.  There are few few little mentions that might get me to upgrade including the new XSLT profiling.

You can give his article a read here - go ahead it’s only 2 pages.

Apple TV… But with an xBox 360

January 26th, 2008

Thanks to an incredible revalation I am able to watch movies, listen to itunes and look through my iPhoto collection all in the comfort of my living room on the big-screen and surround sound.

I’ve got an iMac G5 that is my permanent home computer, my MacBook Pro laptop and my girlfriends iBook that have heaps of data stored on them. Sitting in the comfort of my office watching a movie on my iMac’s beautiful screen isn’t necessarily a bad experience but lets face it - there’s nothing like a comfy couch.

The folks over at nullriver have put together an essential app called Connect 360 - http://www.nullriver.com/index/products/connect360 - that puts all of your movies, music and photo’s right into your xBox.

It’s simple to install on OS X and is just a preference pane that once registered.. well .. just works. When I say simple I mean it. Once you’ve registered just fire up your xbox and go to the dashboard and select any wifi (if your xbox has wifi) or networked sources and click play.

Easy as pie.

Ben Forta Speaks To Nashville’s Flex Group

January 25th, 2008

Last night I had the distinct pleasure of attending Ben Forta’s appearance. For those who don’t know - Ben is a product evangelist for Adobe and had a lot of great insight on what technologies lie right around the corner.

Ben discussed Adobe Flex and Adobe Air and their relation to Adobe’s traditional software applications like Photoshop, Fireworks and Dreamweaver.

Personally I am extremely excited about both Flex and Air. It looks like we’ve only got a few more weeks until the official launch of Flex 3 so keep your eye out as Adobe continues to make the Internet a better looking place to live.

GoDaddy Integrating Google Webmaster Tools

November 13th, 2007

I read this story on mashable about GoDaddy’s adoption of Google’s webmaster tools.

I think that this is a great marriage. I’ve been using GoDaddy in many capacities over the past 4 years and suggest them to all of my clients. Despite their constant attempts to up-sell I admire them in just about every facet of their business. Much-so that I made Bob Parsons’ podcast a regular download on my podcast listing.

I utilize Google’s webmaster tools quite frequently and am especially impressed with their analytics engine. Google is certainly lightyears ahead of any competing search engines / tech companies when it comes to developer tools.
